Noss Mayo, South Hams, circular walk 1

Noss Mayo is a picturesque village on the banks of the River Yealm in the South Hams.

The village is approximately 50 mins drive from The Cleveland Bed & Breakfast.

Parking is readily available and free, but be cautioned that some of the parking is tidal - so don't forget about your car before high tide!

The first part of the walk is the hardest. Turning left out of the car park by the tennis courts, you immediately climb, with a row of cottages on your right.

Keep going straight, where the sign says 'no through road'. You will now be walking up a fairly steep path which is rocky in places with open fields to your left.

You will eventually reach a lane. Turn left and walk along the lane for approx 20 metres. You then turn right into the National Trust car park.

From here the path is well signposted with coast path markers. The views out across the English Channel and towards Plymouth are breathtaking.

The coastal path follows the headland round until you are back on the banks of the River Yealm, walking along wooded creeks with hidden properties on either side to admire.

It is easy to miss the turning for Cellar Beach, where you can swim up the estuary back to Noss Mayo if you wish to (and if the tide is in the right direction!). It is on the left, opposite a large arts and crafts house, which has a weather vane of a ship on it. There is a small wooden sign with the National Trust acorn on it. Take this left hand turn and follow it down to the beach.

After your swim, continue on the path down to Noss Mayo, where The Ship Inn will greet you for a well earned refreshment!

Walk approx 4.5 miles. After the initial climb the path is relatively flat and then gradually downwards.
